Adelie Penguins

The Adelie penguin, or Pygoscelis adeliae, is a species of penguin that can be found ala around the outer parts of penguin with black feathers on their backs and white feathers on their stomachs. They have white circles around their eyes and red beaks as well as gray-pink feet. This feather pattern helps them to camoflauge in the water from both sides, as predators will have to look up to see the penguins, but with the sun hitting the water, it is harder to see the white bellies of the Adelie penguins. Their black bellies help them camoflauge once they dive deep into the water.

The weight of an Adelie penguin can range from 8.5 to 12lbs (3.86 to 5.44kg). They are an average height of 27.5 inches(0.7m). The Adelie penguin has a life span of about 20 years.

Adelie penguins are carnivores and have a diet consisting of krill, fish, and squid. They are also excellent swimmers. They can go as deep as 575ft (175 meters) and can travel as much 185 miles( 297.729km) on a round trip to find food.

Adelie penguins move to the Antartic coastline to breed and live in colonies with over thousands of penguins. They build nests for the eggs using the rocks nearby and both mates take turns sitting on the egg(s) until they hatch. Adelie penguin chicks are able to swim after nine weeks.
